CEEPUS Summer School in Split: Water and aqueous solutions through measurement of physical and chemical properties and computer modeling
Within the framework of the CEEPUS network SI-1312: " Water - a common but anomalous substance that has to be taught and studied", a Summer School dedicated to water and aqueous solutions was held. The programme was organized at the University of Split, Faculty of Science in cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry and Technology.
After two successful Summer Schools held at the University of Ljubljana, this time the host was the University of Split that took over the organization and continued to promote interdisciplinary research and education about water as a specific and interesting chemical substance.
The summer school was held from 7th to 13th of July 2024, in the period of final student exams, the beginning of the summer season and just before the big "Ultra" event in Split. The school's program focused on physical chemistry, modeling and application of aqueous solution systems, colloidal systems, hydrogels, deep eutectic solvents and ionic liquids. The organization was structured in two parts: morning lectures and afternoon practical workshops. The lectures were attended by all participants, while the workshops took place in two modules: experimental measurements of physico-chemical properties and computer modeling of solutions.
Students were divided into smaller groups, with up to 8 students for experimental workshops and up to 15 students for computer workshops. This division enabled students to work independently with the support of teachers and assistants.
A total of 19 teachers and 37 students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia participated.
During the school there was intensive work, which was shown by the final presentations, which were the joint work of groups of 5 students, where they presented what they had learned and researched and what left the biggest impression. Students also had the opportunity to present their scientific research through poster presentations.
In addition to the scientific and teaching part, socializing was also an important part of the School. The participants had the opportunity to get to know Split accompanied by a professional guide, who introduced them to Diocletian's Palace and other sights in the city center. An evening gathering was also organized on the square in front of the Faculty, which lasted until late at night accompanied by a guitar, Dalmatian, Indian, Brazilian and other songs.
The experiences were extremely positive, and numerous new acquaintances, friendships and agreements were made for future schools and projects.
